Most people call me when they're already getting quotes. The prices are all over the place and it's hard to tell what's actually different between them. Below is exactly what goes into one of our roofs and how the job runs, so you can compare.

Do I need a new roof or just a repair?
Replacement usually makes sense when the shingles are worn out across the whole roof, when there are already two or three layers on the house, or when leaks keep showing up in different places. One leak in one spot on a roof with years left is usually a repair.
I'd need to get up there to tell you which one you have. I take photos while I'm on the roof and go through them with you afterward.
What's on your estimate
Two quotes can look alike on paper and be very different jobs once the crew shows up. These are the line items on every HoneyFyx roof replacement.

- Tear-off to the deck Every job
Every old layer comes off. A Lake Saint Louis house we did last year had three layers of shingles on it and a leak by the fireplace that was impossible to trace until we got down to the wood.
- Decking check Every job
With the old roof off, we look at the boards underneath. If any are soft or damaged, you'll see photos before they get covered up.
- Underlayment and drip edge Every job
Underlayment is the water barrier under the shingles. Drip edge is the metal strip along the edge of the roof that sends water into the gutter instead of behind it.
- New flashing Every job
Flashing is the metal that seals the roof where it meets a chimney, a wall, or a vent pipe, and it's where most leaks start. Some crews bend the old flashing back into place. We put in new.
- Roof-to-wall flashing When needed
If your roof runs into a wall with vinyl siding on it, we do a detach-and-reset. That means pulling the siding loose, putting new flashing behind it, and hanging the siding back up.
- Attic ventilation Every job
If the attic can't vent heat, the shingles bake from underneath and wear out early. We check the intake and exhaust vents and tell you if anything needs to change.
- GAF Timberline shingles Your choice
We install GAF Timberline HDZ as our standard. Timberline UHDZ, which is Class 4 impact-rated, is available if you want more hail resistance.
- Catch-all system and magnet sweep Every job
Tarps and our catch-all setup protect the house and landscaping while debris comes off the roof. At the end we run magnets over the yard and driveway more than once to pick up nails.
Our price usually runs 10 to 15 percent above other quotes. Most of that difference is the flashing and siding work, which a lot of cheaper roofs leave out.

I come out and write the estimate
I walk the roof, take photos, and explain what I found. Then I write the estimate on my iPad in the truck and we go over it together before I leave your driveway.

You get the full schedule within three business days
Within 72 hours of signing, you'll know when materials get delivered, when the crew starts, and who'll be on the job. We send notifications as each step gets closer.

Tear-off day
Walter, my production lead, pulls the dump truck up in the morning. The catch-all system goes up before the first shingle comes off.

The new roof goes on
Decking, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, and shingles, in that order. Any detach-and-reset siding work for the roof-to-wall flashing happens during this step.

Cleanup and walkthrough
We haul away the debris, sweep for nails, and I walk the finished roof with you.

I'm Chris Heins. I started as a union carpenter after high school and spent close to 20 years managing insurance restoration jobs before I opened HoneyFyx in 2019. The company is small on purpose, and I'm involved in every job from the first visit to the final walkthrough. If something comes up during your project, you call my phone.

Questions homeowners ask
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most houses take a day or two, depending on how big and steep the roof is and what the weather does. You'll have your exact dates within three business days of signing.
What shingles do you install?
GAF Timberline HDZ is our standard. If you want more hail resistance, we also install GAF Timberline UHDZ, which is Class 4 impact-rated. I bring color samples to the estimate.
Why is your quote higher than some others?
We replace the flashing instead of reusing it, we detach and reset siding when the roof-to-wall flashing needs it, and we take off every old layer. If you ask each roofer to show you what their price includes, the gap usually makes sense.
Why do you ask for a deposit?
The deposit pays for your materials so we can order them and get them delivered. If a roofer doesn't ask for one, it's fair to ask how your shingles are getting paid for. You'll have the payment schedule in writing before you sign.
Do you work with insurance claims?
Yes. Most of the roofs we're doing this year are paid for by the homeowner, but we handle insurance claims too. The process is the same either way.
Do I need to be home during the install?
No. I do like to walk the finished roof with you, so if you're at work that day we'll pick a time that suits you.
