Hail inspection, furnace flue repair
He called about hail and we didn't find any. We patched a leaking furnace flue instead.
A stain on the ceiling usually doesn't mean the whole roof is shot. Most of the leaks I get called out for come from flashing around a chimney, a wall, or a vent pipe, and those can be fixed on their own.

Can my roof be repaired, or do I need a new one?
If the problem is in one area and the rest of the shingles still have life in them, repair it. Flashing leaks in particular can almost always be fixed without touching the rest of the roof.
When the shingles are worn out everywhere, or you've patched three different leaks in two years, a repair stops being a good use of money. I'll show you photos so you can see which case you're in.
Repairs we do most often
Around St. Charles and Lincoln County, most repair calls fall into one of these:
- Leaks around a chimney or fireplace, which are almost always a flashing problem
- Step flashing where the roof meets a wall. When siding covers it, the fix is a detach-and-reset: the siding comes off, new flashing goes in, and the siding goes back up.
- Cracked rubber boots around plumbing vent pipes
- Shingles that blew off, lifted, or creased in a windstorm
- Furnace and water heater flues that aren't sealed where they go through the roof
- Drip edge problems that let water run behind the gutters and rot the fascia board
A lot of inspections end with no work
Plenty of the roofs I climb on are fine. A homeowner in St. Peters wanted to know if it was time to replace his roof, and it wasn't. In Saint Charles, we looked over another roof and told the owner it still had years left.
A homeowner in Florissant called us about hail. There wasn't any hail damage, but his furnace flue was leaking, so we patched it and he didn't need anything else.

Will you repair a roof you didn't install?
Yes. Most of our repairs are on roofs another company put on.
Why does my roof leak around the chimney?
Usually the flashing, the metal that seals the chimney to the roof, has worn out or pulled loose, or it wasn't installed right to begin with. New flashing normally fixes it. Caulk over old flashing normally doesn't last.
Can you match my existing shingles?
We can usually get close. Shingles fade over time and some colors get discontinued, so a patch may be a shade off. I'll tell you before we start.
How do I know if I need a repair or a replacement?
Look at whether the damage is in one spot or everywhere. One area on a roof in decent shape is a repair. Worn shingles across the whole roof, or several leaks, point toward replacing it. The photos from the inspection make this pretty clear.
